Manager Steve Bruce has hailed on loan Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone following his performance in our victory over Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon.

Heading to the DW Stadium, Villa kept our form going with a two nil victory With James Chester once again finding the net, and importantly January capture Scott Hogan getting himself off the mark.

Two nil in some ways doesn’t reflect the game though as the hosts had far more chances and possession than we did, but with three efforts on target, we took the two that mattered.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail in his post game press conference, the performance of Johnstone between the sticks stood out for the gaffer and he called it the 23 year old’s ‘best performance’ since he came in on loan.

With Villa winning five of the last six games, Johnstone kept his fifth clean sheet in that run as well.

‘He`s progressing week by week. He`s a young player who we brought into the club and he can only get better. Today was his best performance in terms of making two really good saves, really good ones which matter down to his left-hand side. And we`ve always got that little bit up front. With Hogan fit now, I`ve got that nice scenario where I can bring on people like Lansbury and Hogan to win us the game.’

Whilst Bruce wasn’t overly delighted with the performance, it is about building a winning mentality now and Wigan was all about remaining unbeaten and taking the victory – so pretty or not history will say three points.
