I thought I’d knock this article up to open up a bit of a debate on Mr Nigel Reo-Coker … a man who seems to divide opinions across the board. Some love him, some hate him, and with now only one more year left on his current contract, this could be a decisive season for him and his future.

Personally, having watched him play, I like the guy… his work rate is 2nd to none no matter who the opposition are, and his tackling cannot be faulted. I’ve also been keeping a beady eye on his passing – something which is often knocked by Villa fans, and I have to say that although he does make the odd errant pass, he’s certainly not as bad as some fans make out.

I think sometimes, it’s very easy for someone to say something, and then it becomes a mantra that we all keep repeating over and over again, and then… 76 minutes into the game, when the guy does make a bad pass, that old chestnut comes out again ‘oh here we go – NRC can’t pass!’ I’ve seen every single one of our midfield players (Milner & Petrov included) make mistakes – unfortunately that’s a human trait, and although he’s never going to be another Iniesta, I believe NRC to be a good solid player, and I also would like to see him start ahead of Petrov in the defensive midfield role on occasion.

I believe (although it’s probably market value given only 12 months contract left) that £4m would be a mistake, and where would we get another midfielder of better quality for that price?

Remember this guy used to captain the England U21’s. Here’s hoping he stays, fights for his place, and gets his chance…. We could certainly do a lot worse!
