Grey day today whether the sun is out or not.
A shell shocked Kevin MacDonald told the official site after that awful defeat against Rapid Vienna that he suffered a ‘rollercoaster of emotions’ from ‘ecstasy’ after our goal to the ‘despondency’ when they equalisted and ended up winning.
‘We are obviously very disappointed. I thought we were in total control when we went a goal ahead. We might have scored one or two more and I thought we played some good football, when we got our top players like Stephen Ireland and Ashley Young on the ball. We gave away a silly equaliser and then got in front again. At that point, I expect a team with so many top players to actually keep the lead for a bit longer than they did.’
Adding ‘three individual mistakes and we are out the tournament.’
The blame game? Hmmm. ‘You can’t legislate for individual mistakes from international players. It was disappointing.’
He goes on to say how disappointed the players are (very unusually for me, I had access to the players lounge last night and I can say it was like a wake in there, a lot of hurt players and some very hurt fans. Certainly saw no pleasure from any of the players who were there so can believe Big Mac (who also looked gutted) when he says:
‘It’s a major blow for them personally because they have a lot of pride. They are professional footballers and they are proud of what they do.’
