Olof Mellberg, who has gone down in history as the first person to score a goal at The Emirates Stadium has spoken about the teams performance in the 1-1 draw against Arsenal at the weekend.

The Villa and Sweden defender said:

‘It was great to get a point and it was a pleasing performance as well. We defended well in and outside the box and we weren’t too afraid of letting them get close to our goal. I thought we approached this game differently to how we’ve done in the past. In the past we’ve tried to play higher up the pitch and tried to go at them which has maybe created space for them and led to us conceding too many goals.’

Adding: ‘The manager has just tried to motivate us, give us confidence and make us believe we can get something out of games like these. We haven’t had too much time to work on specifics, but he’s just tried to motivate everyone to do their best and I thought we did against Arsenal. That’s refreshing but it was important we got off to a good start as well, especially at a place like Arsenal. That gave everyone a lift as well.’

Mellberg continued positively saying ‘It’s like a new era for me because there are a lot of things happening at the club with a new manager and the takeover. We’re also waiting to see if the manager brings in a few players in the next couple of weeks. A change feels good sometimes, especially when you’ve been at the club for a long time.’

Happy days!

  • I reckon if Villa do really well this season, Mellberg could start to get the regonition he deserves, nationally. He’s a top top defender on his day.

  • Hear hear. I think he has suffered as he has not had a decent partner for ages. When he is in form I would not swap him for any other defender. LONG LIVE THE CAVE MAN.
