Knightmare’s For Zat’s Future

Zat Knight is hoping that reports of Martin O’Neill’s interest in Vermaelen doesn’t mean an end to his Villa career.

Speaking to the Express and Star Zat admits that although his future ultimately lies in the hands of O’Neill, he would love to see his time out here.

The speculation about Zat’s future is most likely pre emptive to be honest. His form has not been much different from fellow centre halves this season so there’s no reason to single him out specifically for replacement, and even if O’Neill’s interest in Thomas Vermaelen does turn into a transfer at this stage he’s likely to be Martin Laursen’s replacement although like most, I’m hoping it’s a case of no news is good news when it comes to the Big Dane.

Speaking to the paper, Zat said:

‘Do I expect to be a Villa player next season? I hope so. That’s why I signed a long-term contract for four years, I want to be here, I want to fight to be in the first XI, but it’s in the manager’s hands.

‘It’s been mixed emotions for me this season. The manager keeps you on your toes. There have been times when I’ve felt I’ve had a good game and was going to play the next game, but didn’t. Sometimes that is hard to swallow.’

As for building some more strength in depth, and any future centre half signings specifically, he adds:

‘I’m all for having four centre-halves, because if one gets injured there is only three left. You definitely need one on the bench.’
