It was being reported yesterday that striker Jonathan Kodjia was due to report back to Bodymoor Heath as he continues to step up his recovery from a broken ankle.

Having suffered the break in the penultimate game of the campaign against Blackburn Rovers and sadly putting an end to his hopes of being the first player to 20 goals in a campaign since Peter Withe, it was first feared he might be out of action until the autumn, but with successful surgery and diligent hard work over the summer he’s well ahead of track and it’s said club medics remains quietly confident that he could be in a good shape to play at least some part of our Championship opener against Hull City on August 5.

That would be a massive boost if true, but if he doesn’t make that game the fact his return has even involved speaking about Hull shows the rate of his recovery.

Manager Steve Bruce revealed earlier this month that having spent the last few weeks training on his own in Clairefontaine, it was expected he would return to Villa on Thursday July 20 and as of yesterday, nothing appeared to have got in the way of that.

A massive boost for us and even 20-30 minutes in our final friendly now will have him a hell of a lot closer than anybody originally thought.
