With the transfer window slowly coming to a close – has to be one of the quietest ever surely? – Paul Lambert has again said he won’t be spending big if he can pull some deals off.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail Lambert said when asked if he was preparing to spend like Houllier did:

‘No chance, none whatsoever. I think Darren came in and the lad Makoun didn’t he? No, absolutely not a chance. We’re trying to do something with the structure of the club, but we won’t be able to do that.’

Lambert again added that he does have deals in the offing but if they don’t come off, he won’t panic buy anybody and he’s happy to go with the squad we have as he trusts them to beat our relegation worry:

‘I get on really well with Randy, he really has been great with me. If I’ve got to go with the group I’ve got then I’ll go with it. I don’t have a problem, I’ve got nothing but praise for these lads. They give me everything they’ve got. Yes, I’d like two more results to get us out that bottom end, I’d like to get to a cup final and those sort of things like every Villa fan would.’

Still uncomfortably quiet really isn’t it. We all know we need strengthening, we all know we need a bit more experience, so let’s hope the deals do come off and they work, because we all need a bit of a lift and some belief back don’t we.
