Paul Lambert has said that he is confident that Villa can take our cup form into the league, and he’s expecting us to do it this weekend.

Speaking to the Official Site ahead of the Liverpool clash Lambert said that we had been looking threatening in our league games but it just wasn’t quite clicking for us as it was in the Cup:

‘I don’t think there is a straight answer to that because we’ve always looked threatening. Even against Stoke, we had chances to score. The ball just never bounced the right way at times. At QPR, we might have got one or two more, so the goal scoring has never been a problem. We’ve had great chances to score in the league, I don’t prepare any differently. On Tuesday we were always a threat and were absolutely ruthless in our finishing.’

The chances are being created and the formation definitely suits Christian Benteke and Andreas Weimann to be the threat and provide the running, so hopefully the confidence boost from the Norwich will carry through and players will just take the pop against Liverpool and continue to grow.

Elsewhere on the Official Site Lambert also talked about our formation change to 352:

‘The reasons were a bit half and half for us bringing it in. First we played Reading and QPR and we thought we had to protect things a little, but the system also allows you to have good passages of playing football and is a system that is working well.’

Lambert was asked if he would stick with it when Ron Vlaar was fit again, and he said:

‘I don’t see why not. I might vary it from time to time and the great thing is if you can adapt, then you’ve got good players on your hands.’

It does seem a good staple for us and does seem to play to the strengths of our players keeping us solid in defence, but there is a fluidity when on the attack. If he can tweak it right during games to further suit the players on the pitch, but also to react quickly to changes in the games the core basis would allow for us to pile more pressure in attack when we are on top, but also to drop a few back when the opposition get a second wind.
