Manager Paul Lambert has said he couldn’t have asked for more from the team last night as we went down 4-0 to Champions Elect Manchester City.

City’s quality and ultimately, their nous in front of goal showed through but for an hour to be fair I thought we competed well, we were very good for the point and it was one of those games where if we had managed to get our noses in front, it might have shook them enough for us to take the win. Unfortunately, as seems usual thesedays though, once they got their noses in front it rattled us, and it did just look like a matter of time until they got their second.

Four nil though I think flattered them, and it’s disappointing to see us create so few chances again, but that’s not to say City wouldn’t have been good value for a 2/3 nil win.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, for a change I have some sympathy for Lambert’s words – but it is the same old record.

‘I thought we did fantastic. I really did, especially in that first hour we were excellent. We were frustrating them, the game plan was working fantastically well. I knew we wouldn’t come here and dominate the ball, we had to counter attack. Obviously Andi had a chance, we had a spell but we just couldn’t get a goal. Moments like that, you have to take them.’

Weimann had his chances to score, Bowery’s scuffed half volley stands out as well as two key moments that if they don’t change the game, they at least normalise the score line and give us something to show for our efforts.

Of course Lambert goes on to reference the injuries we have suffered this season and Libor Kozak, Christian Benteke and Jore Okore are trotted out, but also Gabby Agbonlahor and Marc Albrighton.

Many wondered where Albrighton was and although there’s no explanation of what the injury he suffered was, he at least in that group so it gives some explanation for his omission which confused many.

‘Effort wise I couldn’t fault them. I was very proud of the effort. They gave me everything they had.’
