Despite the defeat, Paul Lambert has said the signs are good for Ron Vlaar and Ciaran Clark as a centre half pairing.
Speaking to the Official Site, Lambert heaped praise on Clark for his attitude and the way he handles himself, and he also said he believes Ron Vlaar has settled in well, but more importantly he sees the signs of a burgeoning understanding between them both that will serve us well in the future.
‘The fans gave Ron a great reception and I thought his performance was excellent. He’ll be a good player for us, he’s the kind who will fit in straight away. Ron and Ciaran were excellent together and combined well as a partnership. For a young guy Ciaran handles himself very well, he offers great balance on the left side of the pair and I’m really pleased with how they developed an understanding.’
Early days by any standard really, but hopefully both players can build up a proper understanding that will serve us well as the season progresses. We already know Clark has a great understanding with Baker, so if we can shore up the middle of defence and stop the leaks, we should have a much more entertaining season.
