Paul Lambert has told the players to ‘pick themselves up and go again’ after today’s very disappointing performance and result against Southampton.
Speaking to the Official Site after the 4-1 loss Lambert explained he was reasonably pleased with our first half display, but offering no excuses for the second half capitulation, he described it as simply ‘not good enough.’
‘If you’re not bang at it, that’s what can happen. We deserved to go one nil up but you have to sustain that. In the second half it wasn’t good enough. Now we pick ourselves up and go again.’
With Manchester City and the Baggies coming up there’s likely to be a bit more anger before joy over the coming week.
‘Losing Stephen was a blow because I thought he was playing really well. But there’s no excuse for that. We needed the second goal, one is never enough. I never get too high when we win and I never get too despondent when we lose. They gave us the effort and I can’t fault that, we will keep cracking on.’
The scoreline is one thing, but I think most fans are angry about the performance. It wasn’t so much really that it was a bad day at the office, it was just the decisions weren’t right. Way too many long balls, midfield disappeared and the substitutions were a bit bizarre making us weaker and not improving us.
But again as we all know, it’s a learning curve. Benteke and Westwood aren’t quite ready yet, so we should see Herd and Weimann back involved until they are – but it’ll take time for it to all come together, and as we were all saying after Swansea anywhere, there was lots of work still left to do and improvements to be made.
Today clearly showed that to be the case.
