Paul Lambert has said he is very proud of the players after their efforts today, he’s just disappointed we didn’t come out of the game with anything to show for it.
Speaking to the Official Site after the gutting 2-1 loss to Chelsea, the gaffer explained that he believed we should have won, let alone come away with a point.
‘In my opinion, yes. I thought we were excellent. We looked great and had chances. We gave it an unbelievable effort, we gave it everything. The lads were great, at 1-0 we looked so comfortable.’
Unfortunately then Christian Benteke was sent off, leading Lambert to say.
‘The sending off was huge. It gave Chelsea a lift. Up until then we looked great. But the lads have given us absolutely everything, I can’t ask for more.’
Lambert obviously wasn’t too chuffed with the decision as he didn’t believe it was a sending off because Benteke ‘is looking at the ball’.
‘Look at the one where Terry takes Sylla down, he’s the last man, the referee has got to see that, Sylla is through. Cole could only get round when Sylla’s gone down, the referee should have seen that the way I have seen it and the way 40,000 saw it.’
As it was the final home game of the campaign, Lambert again ended with praise for the fans for not only their support on the day, but for the way they’ve backed the team all season long.
