Paul Lambert has taken the sensible approach to today’s 3-1 to Notts Forest, insisting he has taken plenty from the game, but the results are irrelevant.

Speaking to the Official Site Lambert insisted that he ‘certainly won’t dwell on that’ when talking about the game as he knows ‘we’ll be okay’ as the season progresses.

Fair enough, Lambert has refused to get too carried away with results so far that have gone with us, so it stands to reason he won’t go overboard on criticism but he’ll certainly have learnt a lot about the squad from the loss, and whatever it may have been that saw us fall apart in the final 20 minutes.

In pre season terms and as he still looks to assess the squad, that’ll be a far more useful lesson for the manager than a convincing victory.

‘I got the same from this as the other five friendlies. It’s just fitness to get the lads through games. Pre season games don’t mean a great deal to me, it’s all about fitness and the lads have been excellent.’

Lambert also comments that although victories help build confidence, he’s not going to let one loss change our pre season vibe so far, and dare I say reading between the lines, in some ways he may have welcomed it as it will focus the players are stop them from getting to carried away with how performances and results have gone for us so far.

When they get on that pitch they still have to earn victories and they have to take their chances, and had we taken a bit more care with the offside disallowed goals, we’d have wrapped the game up nicely before Forest woke up. Learn that, and take that into the season and as Paul says ‘listen, we’ll be’ll be okay.’

On two specific positives that Lambert took from the game:

‘I thought Ron was excellent, I thought he was really commanding. He will do great for us and I think he’ll be a big favourite with the crowd, that’s for sure.’

‘It’s a big plus that Darren returned. He’s a little bit behind in terms of fitness but that will do him the world of good.’
