Late Drama As Villa Book Another Return To Wembley – Why Do We Do It To Ourselves – Match Stats

Aston Villa welcomed Leicester City to Villa Park earlier this evening for our second leg EFL Cup semi-final clash.

With the scores tied at one apiece after the King Power Stadium clash, spirits were boosted when head coach Dean Smith named his starting XI as January capture, Mbwana Samatta made his competitive debut after receiving his work permit.

It was a bright start from the visitors, but Matt Targett took his chance 12 minutes in to give us the advantage and it should’ve been two, but a second from Samatta I’m reliably informed (I was grabbing a drink) was ruled out for offside.

Leicester definitely had their chances though and Orjan Nyland was in inspired form.

A lack of a clinical edge in the second half cost us as Samatta had another great chance but just wasn’t sharp enough, and although Leicester dominated chances, one sloppy bit of defending cost us again as Kelechi Iheanacho snuck in at the far post and made it count with 18 left on the clock.

Would we hold on, could we get a second or even take it to penalties?

Well hold on we did, and when Elmohamady sent in a late cross, Trezeguet made up for an earlier effort and made it 2-1 to us.

Mike Dean did look unhappy – Wes Edens didn’t and he wasn’t alone!

If you don’t mind me, I’m off to see what Gary Lineker thinks of the pitch invasion. Was it a good natured Cup invasion, or one of those things from the dark ages when he runs out of things to say?
