Neil Lennon says Stilian Petrov is ‘unstoppable in some games’ and agrees with Celtic refusing bids for the want-away player.

Lennon, another of Martin O’Neill’s former players, said: ‘From our point of view we want Stilian to stay because he’s such an influential player for us. When he’s in the mood he’s unstoppable in some games. If he stays, we have a very strong midfield with the likes of Stan, Shunsuke Nakamura, Aiden McGeady, Jiri Jarosik, Alan Thompson and myself.’

‘We have six or seven quality players and that’s what you need. It’s encouraging that the board haven’t taken the first offer for Stan. You want top dollar for your best player and they are quite right to stand their ground.’

Portsmouth have failed in a couple of bids for the midfielder. We are now being linked with a move following the arrival of Martin O’Neill and Blackburn, Middlesbrough as well as Fulham have also been linked with the 27-year-old.

(Alan Thompson, there’s another player who never got the full opportunity at Villa, I thought when he was sold he was just coming good and he has gone from strength to strength at Celtic)

  • Would be nice to have another ‘Stan’ to replace Stevie Staunton! If he’s anywhere near as good he’ll be a Holte End Hero!

  • Celtic wont be able to hold onto Petrov, players always get what they want except perhaps Malbranque. I would not pay more than £5million for him though, there are other options.

  • Absolutely agree with with your view on Alan Thompson. He was touted as a future international when Villa bought him, against very strong competition from other Prem clubs, but was never really given a chance to establish himself. When Thompson was sold t

  • I’m telling ya, HARGREAVES. Stilian is a mad player, but i think if were gooing to go back and forth with a valuable player it should be Owen. But just imagine if we got all 3 players were linked with…Hargreaves, Malbranque and Petrov. Now that would be

  • From what we read and hear, Petrov could prove to be an outstanding signing. I can understand where Lennon is coming from, but he (Petrov) has expressed a desire to move on, and test himself in the premiership. He’ll find a warm welcome awaiting him here
