Luke Young has praised the impact this season of Nigel Hokey-Cokey especially as he believes Villa are a tighter unit with him in the team.

Speaking on the Official Site as our resurgent right back echoed Richard Dunne’s desire for cleaner sheets, he also added some glowing praise for Nige as he believes the best teams defend as an XI as opposed to relying just on the back 4 and the goalie.

‘We’ve seen slowly that we’re now more of a solid unit since the new manager has come in. Nigel has done a great job for us, sitting in there, and giving us a bit more of a base.’

Like Dunne, Luke knows if the defence can keep it tight then it puts us in with a great shot of taking all 3 points.

‘It’s think it’s only away from home that we’ve conceded goals really, if you keep a clean sheet you’ve got a great chance of winning games.’

Young also adds that it’s about balance, pointing to those sides who remain negative throughout in order to secure a clean sheet whereas he thinks in previous years we’ve been a little too ‘gung ho’ in going forward, especially away from home and it’s bitten us on the rear.

Be interesting to see how many agree with the final comment about being too gung ho, as I’ve never really thought that. Three or four players running as quickly as they can towards the other goal whilst everybody else sits back isn’t quite my definition of gung ho but maybe it’s just me?
