Martin O’Neill has once again moved to deny any truth in the reports that Shaun Maloney, who played in our friendly v Stoke, is looking to move back to Celtic due to being homesick.

The Daily Record said that talks were at ‘an advanced stage’ but O’Neill says he’s not heard from his former club or spoken to Maloney about it.

He did admit, ‘I know he was a bit homesick but being homesick is one thing and leaving another – and he has not intimated to be about leaving. I will speak to him if it is necessary. But Celtic have not been in touch with me about Shaun. It is news to me.’

O’Neill added on the official site: ‘I wouldn’t really be wanting people to leave the club. But if people are coming in and demanding that for one reason or another, then we will see. I’ll ask the question and if there are genuine reasons for wanting to leave, I’ll listen to them. But if you are talking about Shaun, I have not had that conversation with him. In this day and age, who knows what is happening but Celtic have not approached me.’

So he isn’t going but it isn’t impossible, if the player wanted to leave that he’d be allowed to. But would the Celtic fans welcome him back? Some on Vital Celtic haven’t seemed keen.

Maloney himself denied these stories last month and said there was nothing he could do to stop them.

10 Replies to “Maloney Going Nowhere?”

  • Obviously there is no transfer activity north of the border. The journalists must be getting restless. Cue the tirade of abuse from celtic fans aimed at MON and Shaun, yawn

  • Rumours are just that, rumours! If they were all true then we would have a squad of 50 players right now. I’m pretty confident this rumour is just as rubbish as all the incoming ones were!

  • I like Maloney, he looks a very tidy player but these rumours can be put to bed by the man himself, so after hearing nothing you have to wonder!

  • But hasn’t he already spoken out on the matter silkie? Only last month he attempted to put these rumours to bed, and probably cant be overly concerned enough about them to re-iterate his stance again. I guess we have to take his denials at face value, but lets be honest here, it wouldn’t be the first time that supporters have been openly fed untruths by a player when it suited his cause to do so.

  • I really want us to keep Maloney, I really feel he could be a BIG difference next season. Maloney for Prime Minister!!!

  • I think he has been offered a job Bus Driving around Govan be a shame for him not to advance his career in Scotland.

  • Of course, if he fails to establish himself as a first team regular come the new year, we could well see him packing his bags for pastures new. But even then, I doubt that a return to Parkhead would be on the cards.
