It was being reported on Sunday that Jose Mourinho had given Aston Villa the green light to take Sam Johnstone back on loan for the 2017/18 campaign.

With his half season loan now at an end following his arrival in the January window, manager Steve Bruce had already confirmed that he would be speaking to Mourinho about the stopper and it appears that meeting took place this week.

The Birmingham Mail say it will be a season long loan spell but there’s no speculation as to whether we will have an option to buy at the end of the year.

With the transfer budget speculation and our need to sell some players full stop, at least it doesn’t seem to have gotten in the way of this deal given how Johnstone improved as the weeks ticked by.

Hopefully we have that permanent clause.
