Aston Villa have this afternoon signed Marlon Harewood from West Ham in a three year deal.

The 27-year-old striker will join up with another former Hammer, Nigel Reo-Coker.

Harewood told the official site:

“I’m delighted to join Villa and I think I’ve come at a really exciting time for the club. The manager is aiming high next season and it’s great to be part of his plans. I want to recapture the form I showed a couple of seasons ago, when West Ham got to the Cup Final and we did so well in the league. There’s a lot of quality here at Villa. I watched the lads train this morning and I’d forgotten just how much quality there was already here.”

“My mate Nigel Reo-Coker has already signed and I know all about his qualities, so I’m just really pleased to be on board. Villa finished last season strongly and I know the aim is to get into Europe this time around. Hopefully I can play my part in that.”

Fair enough, not the signing we all wanted, but his record is one in three and now he is a Villa man, he’s got my backing. Come on Harewood, ram the words down the doubters throats at get 20 goals next season.

Right, next signing please………..!

  • marlon must be over the moon at this opportunity, and i am pleased for him, he is big, strong and pi**es defenders of, and he runs his heart out.

what would you rather someone who is happy sitting on the bench at 31 or a 27 year old knowing this is the move of his career and cant wait to get started?????

i think he will suprise alot of people personaly.

read mon’s interview aswell, read between the lines, he isnt gonna be a main striker, he is back up adding depth. we need more depth, we cannot compete with the likes of spurs yet, but we will in time.

  • I’d rather have 4 or 5 quality players like those signed by Spurs, myself, but then I’m not an O’Neill sycophant

  • I’d rather have quaility too, I thought Villa had turned a corner and this signing brings us crashing back to reality. I’ll back him on the pitch but I aint a happy chappy.

  • But you aren’t realistically going to get the “4 or 5 quality players like those signed by Spurs” until you have built a team good enough to get into Europe, and that is NOT a one-season effort. You don’t have to be an “O’Neill sycophant” to want to get behind your team, avfc48 – but he’s the man we have at the moment, he’s a damn sight better than anything we’ve had for nearly 25 years, so for God’s sake why don’t you just get behind the team and see what we can build over the next four or five seasons – because that is what it takes. If you think any manager can do it in less time than that, you need to take a reality check!

  • And by the way, it seems possible that Spurs will sign SWP from under our noses too – if you can believe paper talk. Does that mean MON/Villa have failed yet again in your eyes? Do you really think that SWP will leave his home town to come to VP when he can go to a club just up the road, suffer no upheaval in his home life, and play his football in Europe. For heaven’s sake we have to all get real here!!!

  • Welcome aboard Marlon, and good luck to you in your VP career. There’s doubters out there, prove them wrong. Look forward to seeing you in the real/original claret and blue shirt on Saturday week in Columbus, Ohio. Expect a couple of goals from you buddy.

  • It’s pretty well known in the media circles that SWP wants to come to Villa (his dad has been opening his big mouth), it’s also pretty certain that Chelsea would be reluctant to sell to Spurs, and Ian Wright would not want his son playing for the enemy! So if we dont get him, and he goes to someone else then yes I will feel let down, as he is there for the taking!

  • glensider- I live in Dayton and will be at the game in Columbus as well!! Can’t wait.

I have to agree with everyone, not the player I wanted, but let’s be realistic and hope he can prove the doubters wrong.

  • Bob the builder – if you think that way we will never sign good players. I will cheer his name sure – welcome on board Marlon get that big round head stuck into some defences and show them what the ‘woods all about.

  • Marlon.. Marlon Harewood. Marlon Harewood in the air…..!!!! Shocked at the negativity. I admit I wasn’t overly impressed when I first heard the news but his record aint bad and he knows Villa is the place to be. A great addition to the squad I’d say. Welcome aboard the Randy-lution Marlon (slang for Brandy don’t you know!?). The big question now…? WHO’S NEXT?

  • everybody, stop kidding yourselves. this is marlon harewood. poor man’s emile heskey.

  • normally i wouldn’t be one to hop onto other clubs’ forums and goad them about their crappy signings, but i do feel, had, say, wigan signed marlon harewood, i might have made an exception.

  • “But when Martin O’Neill phones you up and tells you he wants to bring you to a club like Villa, and tells you all about his plans for the future, then of course it’s a very exciting prospect.

“I had a great time at West Ham and although last season was a struggle down there the club eventually managed to stay in the Premiership.”

Harewood admitted he would have some regrets about the way his Upton Park career came to an end.

“Was I disappointed with the way it ended for me at West Ham? Yes and no,” he added.

“But my time at West Ham is behind me now and I have to look forward to life with Aston Villa.

“I have come here ready to fight for a place in the team, I am under no illusions there is a shirt waiting for me.

“It is up to me to impress the manager and earn a place in the team.

“But I think I am capable of having a very good season and that Aston Villa are capable of having a very good year as well.” Marlon Harewood

  • Scot Dutch, I’ll be in Cincinnati from tomorrow ( Wednesday 18th – arrive Cinti 7.20 p.m.). See my thread on 100% Villa, thats three of us going, you, me, and villabrownie. On line in U.S. – so p.m. me, even if we only get to chat via phone.

  • Oh dear me…..aren’t you lot a bit upset that all Lerner’s money is buying you is average players for loads more dosh!

‘It’s Villa on the phone, add another £2M – quick’.

  • Deano – if the papers are right and SWP wants to come to Villa then I am absolutely sure he will, but do you really believe what newspapers say? And Tyler – I didn’t say we will never sign good players, only that we can’t EXPECT to simply because we say we want them!

  • Welcome Marlon, this is the biggest club you`ve played for so maybe i will all go OK for both of us,UTV my friend !
