Vital Villa asked, in a poll suggested by Burnsy, who should partner Olof Mellberg this season?

The majority with 52% said Martin Laursen, who had a season long struggle to return from a career threatening knee injury.

34% backed rookie Gary Cahill who will long be remembered for that fantastic overhead kick against Blues in the derby last season.

5% wanted a new signing to partner skipper Mellberg, 5% said Mark Delaney who played a few blinders in the centre last season before picking up another injury.

Only 2% voted for Liam Ridgewell and Wilfred Bouma, who appears to be favoured on the left anyway.

  • I believe it is all a question of balance. Laursen, Mellberg and Cahill all play on the right of the back two. Delaney should be right back as he is better (when fit) than Aaron Hughes. Ridgewell is the only natural left sided centre half. Laursen and Mel

  • I know Mellberg and laursen didn’t play as a combination very often, but on the couple of times I saw them there seemed to be a lot of scandinavian arguing and a distinct lack of pace. Voth makes a very sound point, re the left footed right footed combina

  • What I don’t understand is how Bouma was playing alongside Jaap Stam in the centre of Holland’s defence at Euro 2004, yet he failed to make a single appearance there last season, even when we had one fit recognised centre back????
