Martin O’Neill has admitted that his priority is the defence having lost retired Martin Laursen and sold Zat Knight to Bolton.

‘Defence is a priority. We have Carlos and Curtis but I think, on the whole, we are a bit light defensively. That is something we are looking at. We definitely want to improve ourselves at the back. It is evident we need to do that. We are actively looking at recruits across the back four. We have made enquiries – in fact we have done more than make enquiries – and we will see how the land lies in the foreseeable future.’

He hints here that a move (or two… we can but hope?!) are imminent:

‘I wouldn’t mention individual names but we are in the throes of trying to improve the team. Like everything else, it takes a bit of time but we do have a couple of weeks before the deadline finishes.’

And his last bit is he wants to bring in more players to supplement the squad admitting that he has said that for some adding, ‘and we are obviously looking round for as good value as we can get.’

Good value in football? Not sure it exists and with Real Madrid and Manchester City’s massive spending this summer, it is obvious that the market has become inflated, I guess you either pay the money or you simply don’t get the players?

We asked on the 9th July: Where do Villa most need to strengthen?

Seems the majority agree with MON as 72% voted central defence.

Central midfield 15%
Up front 6%
Goalkeeper 4%
Right-back 1%
Left-back 1%
Wing 1%

Must admit, I was surprised then and remain surprised that we aren’t also frantically looking for a natural goalscorer… hey, maybe we are… just don’t think there are enough goals in the players we have… now come on chaps, score 20 goals each this season and make that last sentence look totally out of place!
