Martin O’Neill saw Villa go seven games undefeated (six in the Prem) in a 2-0 win over Charlton today. The season couldn’t have started any differently than it did last season when we made our worst start in three decades, just shows what a great manager can do (remembering, apart from Petrov, this is the same team as last year!).

He told the official site after the 3rd win on a trot at Villa Park: ‘I thought we played some sparkling stuff at times and fully deserved the three points….After a hesitant start, I thought we played some good football, especially in the second-half. We didn’t make the best of starts. I thought it was a bit like the Reading game, where we just took a while to get started. But we gradually got going and started to create chances.’

‘The first goal settled us and after that I thought we played some sparkling stuff. The second goal came just as we needed it, because Charlton didn’t give up. I was delighted for Gabby to get his goal. He’s been doing very well for us recently and should probably have had a couple of goals on Wednesday at Scunthorpe. He did well again today and I thought he took his goal well. It was a terrific finish and just settled the nerves a wee bit. The second goal was a terrific move and Luke finished it well.’

Adding: ‘Another bonus is that we kept another clean-sheet. We had a few problems early on, losing a lot of headers and we had to withstand a bit of pressure. Thomas Sorensen made a couple of important saves and deep down I’m pleased with the efforts from everyone.’

Amazing that they now play as a unit and all look 110% committed and up for it. Happy days!
