Martin O’Neill said after the 3-0 loss to Manchester United this afternoon at a freezing Villa Park, that the first goal ‘knocked the stuffing out of us.’

He told the official site: ‘We were terrific for long periods. Not only were we well in the game, it looked as if we might go on to win the match. The first goal was a real killer and it knocked the stuffing out of us. We then felt sorry for ourselves for a while and in that period they got their second. Then it was effectively ‘game over.’

‘But we were well in the game and I thought we played splendidly for quite a while. We are disappointed but I couldn’t fault the effort of the players.’

Although Martin O’Neill has to stick up for his players and he is right, for long periods (in the first half) we gave as good as we got, in the second half it became men against boys and their quality showed through as we forgot to close down their top class players. Give the likes of Ronaldo and Scholes any space and they’ll do damage. Round two comes very soon in the FA Cup!

Match report to follow.
