Martin O’Neill told ://www.avfc.co.uk after another lackluster home performance it was ‘disappointing results wise but that finishing 6th was the main thing.

‘We had played some really great stuff in the first half but Blackburn came out with renewed determination and enthusiasm and it set us back for 10 minutes. Then we came back into the game a bit more. But just as we were pressing, they scored. But that said, I am delighted with the team, delighted with the crowd and hopefully we can look again and see where we can improve the team, which is the most important issue.’

On the season as a whole he added, ‘There’s many a thing to be savoured and to be enjoyed from this season. And of course, it is mixed in with a few disappointments. It was a disappointment today but overall we have achieved sixth and I’m delighted. One major reason is we have just the one qualifying game next season in August, rather than July.’

He also promises they’ll try to improve the home form. To be fair, they’ll have to, they can’t rely on die hard fans who would turn up (as Docherty once said) to watch the shirts dry.

On the fans he says he thinks they have appreciated the team and the team have certainly appreciated our support.

‘Yes they are moments in matches where people get irritated. I think that’s a general thing in football. But the fans have been terrific, really terrific. It hasn’t been cheap supporting the team this season. They come out in big, big numbers to support us and I am full of appreciation of it.’

Onward and upward, lets get the manager situation sorted one way or the other, bring in some more top players and start all over again. Don’t you just love footie?!
