Match Stats: Aston Villa v Wigan Athletic – Two Wins From Two

Aston Villa opened the 2018/19 Championship campaign with a reasonably solid victory over Hull City last Monday and today we took to the pitch against newly promoted Wigan Athletic looking to make it six points from two games.

With a busier than expected summer after our much-needed takeover, keeping Jack Grealish and James Chester were the main transfer window highlights, but Wigan did see debuts for Orjan Nyland, John McGinn and a re-debut for Axel Tuanzebe.

The game started brightly enough with James Chester opening the scoring in the 13th minute, but Wigan hit back either side of the halftime break to take a 2-1 advantage. With plenty of pressure, a credited Chey Dunkley own goal got us back on level terms and in the fourth minute of stoppage time Birkir Bjarnason opened his account for the season to give us a 3-2 victory on home soil.

Maximum points for the campaign so far can’t be bad and we more dominated in the statistics that count so on we roll and optimism will hopefully continue to grow.
