Alex McLeish felt today that we saw an inspired performance from the Villa lads, on what he describes as an emotional day.

Speaking to the Official Site Alex said all the players were motivated by Stan’s visit to the dressing room pre game, and he thanked the fans for their response to Stan and the team throughout the game:

‘Stan was with all the boys and they weren’t quite sure whether to applaud, cry or hug, but he shook everybody’s hand and everybody embraced him, it was great to see him.’

As for the game itself – packed out by a number of potential debutants and youngsters – Alex added:

‘I felt it was a travesty that we didn’t get anything out of the game, we are very disappointed, but the show of support for Stan and the team today was fantastic. I think that was good evidence for me to see how they did on the big stage, I’ve got to say the young players came in and did really well against a very strong Chelsea team. I don’t think they were made to look second best the whole game. To come back from 2-0 was fantastic and I’m proud of the way they went about it.’

Good positive words about the youngsters, and bodes well for the future as they’ll all learn from this season, and the experience.

Alex’s one criticism of the game and our performance, is an old, old thing.

‘We have got to stop conceding from set pieces!’
