Alex McLeish has said that if Andi Weimann keeps developing as he has been, that he can be different class for the Villa over the coming seasons.

Speaking to the Official Site McLeish said he’d been delighted with Weimann since he got into the first team, and all season the management staff knew he would make the breakthrough, it was just a matter of when for the young Austrian:

‘If he can score a mixture in and outside the box he will be a fantastic asset for us, he has a kinda knowledge of where to go. The defenders go to the ball but Andreas shows movement away from it. His peeling off the shoulder is superb. We knew we were lucky to have Andi ready to break through, we just weren’t sure when it would happen.’

Whilst admitting that obviously injuries have speeded up his progression to the first team, McLeish doesn’t think it’s done Andi any harm at all, praising the two goals he has grabbed for us this season:

‘It was an important goal against Fulham and a brilliant goal against Stoke. He’s renowned for being a poacher, his movement is really good. Andreas showed great creativity and great imagination in that Stoke match. He had another half chance later in the game and if you look at his movement, his spinning off the defender was terrific. He left the defender for dead.’

There’s a lot of expectation on Weimann now and hopefully he can live up to it. Another tough match against Man United but again a fantastic learning experience for him if, as he should, he rightly starts the game.
