Mellberg Going Or Not?

Rumours have been circulating that Olof Mellberg has been in Turin talking about a move to Juventus. The Villa defender is free to sign a pre-contract with any club as his contract ends in the summer, Thomas Sorenson and Martin Laursen are also free to do the same. It is all a bit mind blowing to see the value of players all able to leave for nothing should they wish.

The reports claim that the 30-year-old Swede has been in Turin and underwent a medical for Juventus and will join them in the summer.

A Villa spokesman said: ‘Olof going to Turin or anywhere is news to us at Aston Villa.’

O’Neill is already on record saying he would like the player to stay, so one has to ask, where is the problem?

O’Neill said: ‘There will be a host of interest in Olof and I think he wants to see what is there for him because this is a really important stage for him. Would I like Olof to stay? Absolutely.’

Other reports are suggesting that Juventus have officially informed Villa of their interest. Mellberg has refused to confirm or deny the reports saying in Sportbladet

‘I will not comment on rumours or newspaper stories on this matter.’ Adding when asked about the Turin trip rumours ‘I do not want to comment on anything at this stage. This rumour has just as much to do with Aston Villa also. Whether I sign for someone else or agree an extension with Villa, or whatever I may yet decide, it will become official fairly quickly but nothing has been done yet.’

I must say I don’t blame him taking one more challenge before the end of his career so if he does go, I’d say good luck to him.

Would rather he stayed mind you!
