Olof Mellberg has confirmed that he isn’t a recognised right-back despite some fans protestations that he plays for Sweden in that position.

In an interview on the official site, he says the last time he played there for Sweden was four years ago.

I would say how remiss it is that we now don’t have a recognised right-back at the club but it is old ground now and too late anyway and would be seen as negative or sacrilege, guess we’ll just have to wait until January! Even then surely we will need two for squad depth? Sorry, there I was off again, negative negative negative, it IS ok not to have a recognised right back, it is, it is, it is. If I say it enough I’ll start to believe it won’t I?

The 30-year-old defender said: ‘I’ll try to do the job as best I can at right-back if that is where the gaffer wants me. I played there for Sweden four years ago, so it’s been quite a while. I played a few games at the beginning of the season last year at right-back.’

On the role he continued, ‘When we played Manchester City we wanted to win the game, so that meant a lot more attacking for me. I find it more tiring, especially when you play in a game like the one we had at Man City. We looked at the statistics and I was way up there in terms of distance covered. It’s a fact that you run more in a game as a right-back compared to centre-back.’

I could be totally wrong, but he doesn’t exactly seem thrilled playing there does he?
