Memories Of A Young European Adventure

Ashley Young is quite modest about the goal that kicked started our European journey this season, but the overriding memory is actually for poor Wilf.

Speaking on the official site today Young recalled the winner that saw off Odense way back last July.

‘It seems like such a long time ago. I just remember picking up the ball and running with it and getting an opportunity to get round the box and have a shot.

‘Luckily for me it looked like a great goal but I think it was a bit lucky where it went. But at the end of the day it went in and it got us through.

‘We’d just come off the back of a good campaign the season before and everybody was looking forward to the start of the season.

‘To get off to winning ways like that and to get into the UEFA Cup was great for the club.’

As said the overriding memory of the day was the injury to Wilf where as we know, he picked up a broken ankle and has had to sit out the entire season.

Speaking about the injury Ash admitted the players found it hard to concentrate on the game immediately after Freddy went off.

‘All the boys were disappointed. I think it took us a while to get our minds back on the game.

‘We kicked on and won the game but all our thoughts were with Freddy after the game.’

Thoughts have been with Freddy for most of the season, especially after the complications he’s faced when trying to return to action.

The Intertwobob seems almost a lifetime away given the season that we’ve had, but hopefully the luck we’ve had with injuries this season won’t be repeated during our next campaign and we can really kick on.

Who knows, with the right wheeling and dealing in the transfer market, maybe this time next season we won’t be remembering a goal that got us into Europe, we can look back a few weeks instead to a goal that won us some European silverware.
