Whilst we all decide if the NotW story if fact or fiction, let’s have some good news.

Paul Merson whilst speaking to the official site has said that Villa’s phenomenal last season did not get the plaudits it deserved and tagged it a ‘campaign to remember’ for fans and players alike.

‘It was a phenomenal season, (and) it went very much unnoticed.

‘I thought Villa’s sixth place finish was the best feat of any club in the Premier League.

‘They have punched well above their weight because it wasn’t the biggest squad and Martin did brilliantly to keep the lads going.

‘He has to take a lot of credit. He gives people confidence and he is a good motivator.’

Merson also picked out Ashley Young and John Carew as being in need of some special praise.

‘I like Ashley. He is a good winger and he has a good attitude out on the pitch.

‘I think he will go on and become a regular for England. I am a big fan!

‘I was very impressed with John Carew too. I didn’t realise how good he was until he joined.

‘He is big, strong – quite similar to Emmanuel Adebayor – and I feel he needs to play every week.’

Staying clear of the Gareth Barry issue, Merson finished off by commenting that the Intetwobob campaign could be the making of our younger stars.

‘We won the Intertoto Cup and went into the UEFA Cup – that was great. It will be super for the younger lads like Gabby, Ashley and Craig.

‘It is a completely different challenge but one they will relish. I think it will also enhance their international chances too.’

Well it’ll certainly do them more good than warming the bench at another club wouldn’t it!
