Aston Villa have tonight officially confirmed they have signed defender Micah Richards on a four year deal.

The 26-year-old will join on a free transfer on July 1 after his contract at Manchester City runs out.

The press talk suggests Sherwood has convinced him he will be used as a central defender as opposed to the full back position he often had to fill and that Micah thinks regular first team football might push him back into England contention. He currently has 13 caps. That’s nothing though to be fair, I’ve at least 20 beanie hats, you don’t see me crowing about it.

Tim Sherwood told the official site: ‘I’m really pleased to get Micah on board and I’m sure he will prove to be an excellent signing for the football club.’

Great signing on a free this, especially as it looks we will lose Ron Vlaar on a similar contract expiration.
