James Milner has said that he is very happy that the team didn’t allow the win against Ajax to break their focus when we faced Wigan.

Speaking on the official site Milner was pleased with our attitude and application, and was well chuffed that the game didn’t turn into an anticlimax.

‘This was the biggest game of the season so far. We said that before kick-off.

‘We wanted to keep that momentum going.

‘Coming to Wigan after the delight of the Ajax result, some teams might not have fancied it.

‘That was particularly the case when the rain started coming down – but we showed what we are all about. We have character as well as ability.

‘It was a great performance. It is not an easy place to come at all and to win like we did was fantastic.’

Milner also comments that the scoreline will mislead a lot of people as to the state of the match, pointing out that our defence had to be on top form due to Wigan’s attacking intent. Those who remember the stats may well remember Wigan had 18 chances all in, so it was by no means a complete rout.

‘People will look at the 4-0 and concentrate on the goals but it was great to record a clean sheet – because they are a handful going forward.

‘They have quality players. Amr Zaki and Emile Heskey have been on fire so far this season so they were always going to be a tough two to come up against. But we kept them quiet and defended brilliantly.

‘We were fantastic on the break. We have pace and ability up front.

‘It was always going to be a good game to hit them on the break and that’s what we did. I thought we controlled most of the second half too.’

It does appear that some of our players are now playing themselves into some good form, and we all know there is still more to come from the team. But it’s a slow and steady improvement, the secret will be to keep the confidence gained from Ajax and move forward with consistency. Playing well when we get the chance, but most importantly grinding out results and playing ugly when needed.
