Martin O’Neill was happy not to have had an early round exit to another lower league club as Villa progressed 1-0 in the Carling Cup v Cardiff City.

He called the tie a ‘difficult hurdle’ explaining on the radio interview I heard on the way home that Cardiff are one of the better passing teams in the Championship, however he also felt we were the worthy winners despite a slightly suspect offside decision (which MON called ‘pretty tight’ – which in manager talk is ‘no way was that offside!) late on ruling out an equaliser and potentially extra time (having seen the re-play, it was not off side surely?!)

The Villa boss added on the official site:

‘We avoided the hat-trick [of early exits to lower league opposition] and I am just pleased to have won the game. I thought Cardiff were never out of it. They played some really nice football too. But I thought we seemed to be in reasonable control of the game.’

He also said what great form he thinks Gabby is in (his goal was great, so very cocky and that is in a good way!) and on Villa’s summer purchase Fabian Delph he said the youngster shows much promise, ‘I thought Fabian did well, really well in the game. He is going to be a player. I don’t want to put an awful lot of pressure on him but he will definitely be a proper player.’
