Martin O’Neill has talked about the red card for Ashley Young who lunged in with both feet in the air in a rather uncharachteristic tackle in the match against Sunderland yesterday. The Villa boss says he has no comlaints at all.

‘I have no complaints. When I saw that Ashley was the one who had been sent off I thought: ‘This is crazy.’ But the referee was absolutely right. When you are going in with two feet and you are diving in, it’s a sending off offence. Players can get injured like that and I have no complaints – not at all.’

Young will now sit out three games. The FA Rules state:

A Player who is dismissed from the Field of Play for Violent Conduct, Serious Foul Play or spitting at an opponent or any other person, whether he has previously been cautioned in the match or not, will be suspended automatically from all Club football, including all FTCM and all non-first team domestic competitive matches commencing forthwith and until such time as his Club has completed three FTCM

(FTCM = First Team Competitive Matches)

So according to this Young will miss the FA Cup game v Doncaster Rovers or Cheltenham Town (away), Pompey (away) and Wigan (at home). Could have been worse I guess and might give the player a rest PLUS it might push Martin O’Neill’s spending plans a bit! (hey lets try to look on the positive side!)

Luke Young also picked up a yellow so he’ll miss the FA Cup game against Doncaster Rovers or Cheltenham Town.

Gabby Agbonlahor, Gareth Barry and Stiliyan Petrov are all teatering on the brink with 4 yellow cards each! Ashley Young also has 4 yellow cards, I would assume that will remain despite the current suspension but am not 100% sure on that although I can’t see why it would be the case and certainly can see nothing in the FA rules to argue otherwise!
