The latest transfer gossip relating to Villa! I still say that most of the players we get this summer won’t have been linked at all!!

The Guardian amongst others say that Villa are confident that a work permit will be granted in order to secure the signing of American goalkeeper Brad Guzan. O’Neill says of the 23-year-old shot stoppper, ‘As everyone knows, we chased him last January and were hopeful at the tribunal for the work permit and it was narrowly defeated. Since then he has played quite a number of games for the USA, not only in friendly matches but also in competitive games by playing a couple of matches in the World Cup [qualifiers]. His position would have improved immensely so we are very hopeful.’

The People say that Villa are still after Blackburn Rovers 37-year-old goalkeeper Brad Friedel and are willing to pay around £2.5million and offer him a 3 year contract.

Seems that Villa might have some competition for press rumoured ‘target’ Blackburn midfielder David Bentley as papers today claim Spurs have bid £17million including goalkeeper Paul Robinson. The Daily Mirror say that move will bring about a ‘merry-go-round’ with us gettting Brad Friedel. I’m sure there were reports like this a month ago with Bentley having a medical at Spurs etc, nothing came of it then and a bit of weekend gossip had Bentley apparently spotted in Dorridge, an area a few Villa players live in!

Various other reports say Rafa Benitez’s hopes of signing Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry for Liverpool have hit a snag as the deal to sell Xabi Alonso has fallen through. That, having read many Liverpool forums, will please the Anfield fans I’d think!

The Sun say Reading manager Steve Coppell is ready to sell half his squad. That includes Nicky Shorey who has been linked to Villa through the summer.

Another report suggests Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan has told Villa that winger James Milner is not for sale.

The Sunday Mercury have the rumour that Villa are after French midfielder Nicolas Marin. Hope he is as good as Matthieu Berson!!!

The Sunday Mercury also claim that ‘out-going skipper Gareth Barry is currently lying low in his hometown of Hastings. The wantaway England international upset a section of Villa fans with an interview to a national newspaper two weeks ago and is now steering clear of the West Midlands until his proposed deal with Liverpool goes through.’
