Martin O’Neill says that Luke Moore is doing well with his recovery from shoulder surgery and promises he won’t rush the young striker back before he is ready.

O’Neill said: ‘He’s doing very well indeed. The temptation as always with these things is to start rushing things, but he’s got a programme and he has to stick to it. He’s going back to see the specialist in America soon and he’s doing really well. I would be loathe to rush him back quicker than we initially said, because for the sake of a couple of weeks, you don’t want him to have this shoulder problem for the rest of his career.’

‘He might as well just stick as rigidly as possible to the regime. I certainly wouldn’t rushing him back for the sake of a couple of weeks, knowing this lad has ten years of a career ahead of him.’

Meanwhile Jlloyd Samuel returned last night for the reserves and has declared himself fit saying: ‘I’m available for the Premiership when needed.’

He told the official site after the game: ‘It was great to be back in action. It’s been a frustrating time for me. The boys have been doing well, but I’ve not been able to play a part. But last night went well. I came through it OK. The plan wasn’t to play the full 90 minutes, but I felt so good that I played the full 90 minutes. I’m not sure whether that puts me back in the frame or not. Wigan might come too soon, but if the call comes, I’ll be there.

‘The big thing now is that I’m back in action and hopefully I can soon be pushing for a return to the first-team.’
