Few links today, papers have been full of them in the last few days to be truthful but I think I’m turning into a grumpy old git because I’m not really interested in reading about links, I want to be reading about players signing and being ready for the new season in claret and blue.

West Brom’s captain (or former captain after asking for a transfer I assume) Curtis Davies is still being linked to us and Spurs. He has stated that he wants out and reports say that we are in the hunt. One goes so far as to say we have offered £6million + £1m in add ons whereas Spurs have offered £5million + Wayne Routledge. If WBA set his price at £9 odd million at the start of the transfer window, why will they drop the price now though?

A report in The Mirror by James Nursey, Villa and Sunderland have apparently been joined in the ‘race’ for Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordeon. The Scottish international, valued at a record breaking £9million, has had a medical and Sunderland and talked to the Black Cats manager Roy Keane. He is now due to talk to Villa. Both clubs have apparently offered £6m + £3m in add-ons.

Some reports are suggesting that the 24-year-old will make a decision today. That said, reports and rumours over the weekend suggested Villa were announcing a new signing on Monday, so to be fair, it looks like everyone is grappling in the dark and most are scratching their heads at the lack of decisive action from the Villa boss.

Scotland manager Alex McLeish is fully behind the keeper moving to the Premiership saying: ‘It would be a great move. It would be fantastic for Craig as long as he plays and I don’t think anyone who is willing to pay £9m for Craig Gordon is going to make him a substitute. Nothing against Hearts but this is the chance of a lifetime to go to the Premiership.’

Meanwhile The Telegraph claims Villa are set to make a £2million bid for England U21 and Arsenal fullback Justin Hoyte.

  • If we could sign all three then I would be much happier. Has anyone heard anything more on Boswinga and Hangeland ? Seems to have gone quiet on those two.

  • Things just seem to drag and drag and drag with the Villa no matter who is in charge, its just the Villa way!

  • I signed Hoyte on championship manager but he couldn’t get in the squad but if we went for a arsenal player maybe get Fabagas or whatever he is called.

  • Christo are you having a laugh ? Fabregas is one of the best young players in the Premiership and Arsenal’s best player. Firstly, Do you think he is going to want to join us ? Secondly, Arsenal are not going to sell him after selling Henry this summer. Fabregas may move next summer but it will be to either Barca or Madrid.

  • Don’t care! MON just sign him along with Gordon and Davis, we will all sleep a little better. UTV

  • Silver Fox, from reading other comments from Christo I velieve he was being deadly seriously and wouldn’t know irony if it bit him.

  • Jon as per your email, I wake up every morning and the 1st thing I do before even getting out of bed is to put on Sky Sports News! But every day goes by just like every week and I see we have only signed 1 player, Reo Coker. (I’m not countin Harewood on principle).

Surely there’s another Celtic misfit we can buy who will go straight into O’Neils squad?!!

  • Days are counting down and still only 1 decent transfer. Forget the rumours and links lets have some bodies at bodymoor

  • See that Everton have signed Baines. I think that they’ll be dark horses this year, i like the way they go about it, quietly and efficiently. I guess that’s the drawback in having a high profile manager in MON in that every link is widely reported whether true or not and builds expectation and inevitably disappointment if nothing happens regardless as to whether we were really in for the player or not. When you consider the number of players we have been linked with MON could spend all day every day just denying rumours. However what he has said is that he’s still after his first choice targets and has back up options if he can’t get them. So we have to be patient still and wait and see. I still have faith that we will have a strong squad by the end of the window.

  • That’s a shame … it was quite funny otherwise!!! On the transfer front I think part of the problem is that agents realise there are several clubs in that level below the Top 4 – Villa, Newcastle, Spurs, West Ham and now Man City who have new money to spend and they’re holding out for the best deals for their players.

  • … several players are simply being touted around these new-money clubs and the whole process is taking forever. I still trust MON to come up with a couple of decent players before the end of the window though.

  • I need some relief from all this. You can imagine the rebellion if we get drilled by Redscouse on Saturday and pick up a few injuries. Can’t imagine the prices are going to go down. MON does appear to be backing down from his confident stance at the weekend

  • The frustration just keeps growing. I think we are all waiting to sigh a huge sigh of relief when/if we finally sign another player. I still think we need at least 4 players (GK, 2xRB, CB). Gordon/Jaaskelianen, Hoyte, Boswinga and Davies would do for me. I know they would probably cost us between £20m-25m but I firmly believe the money is available.
