Following plenty of speculation amongst Aston Villa fans about whether or not summer striker signing Ollie Watkins would see his form rewarded with an England call up, a short time ago this afternoon England head coach Gareth Southgate named him in the squad for the upcoming International break.

Following his arrival from Brentford for a reported record Β£33million fee Watkins has impressed plenty of fans with his tireless work ethic at the top of the pitch, and although the season hasn’t entirely gone his way with bizarre VAR rulings denying him more goals, the 25-year-old has still hit 12 goals and three assists in 30 matches.

For his first year in the top flight, it’s certainly a decent return and there’s every confidence he will improve further next season and hopefully become even more clinical for us.

Sadly Jack Grealish misses out in the games against San Marino, Albania and Poland and naturally fans will now be doubting his involvement against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, but Ollie will have a familiar face alongside him in the shape of Tyrone Mings – so now we just have to see if he caps his maiden call up with a senior debut.

Congrats Ollie!

There will no doubt be plenty of fans who are gutted not to see Ezri Konsa and Matt Targett get call ups as well given their form in 2020/21.
