I’m not sure what most Aston Villa fans were expecting when it was confirmed that we had struck a deal for Hibernian midfielder John McGinn over the summer. It was a snip £2.75million fee and we knew Hibs fans rated him incredibly highly and Brendan Rodgers wanted him at Celtic.

It’s not overstating things to say the 24-year-old has been an utter revelation for his attitude, work rate and tenacious style of play and in 41 appearances (all starts bar one), he’s contributed six goals, mostly absolute crackers, and nine assists and he has been a reliable and top performer all year long for us.

On Wednesday evening as we dished out the player awards for the 2018/19 campaign, he rightly ran home with both the Players’ and Supporters’ Player of the Season awards.

Having received Ian Taylor’s seal of approval, few fans were going to disagree in reality as his consistency across the whole year made McGinn the perfect choice, despite our better form in the second half of the campaign.
