No Whelan Progress – Hughes

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has admitted that Aston Villa haven’t been back with an improved offer for midfielder Glenn Whelan.

Stoke quickly rejected a reported £500,000 offer from us the other week for the 33 year old and it’s believed that they will let him leave but only for around the £1million mark.

Speaking to the Stoke Sentinel Hughes admitted that the player was probably looking for a bit more security at his age and the club wouldn’t stand in his way if a suitable offer came in, but as of yet we haven’t been back.

‘I’m not sure where we’re up to with Glenn. Aston Villa made an initial bid which was rejected out of hand. It’s a little bit of a similar situation to Jon Walters really in that at this stage of Glenn’s career he’s probably looking for a little more security. That maybe being offered at Aston Villa. I don’t think they’ve been back since with an increased offer, it’s gone a little bit quiet I think.’

I think many fans are torn on what Whelan would offer us, but I’d imagine he’d be an experienced option with how big a miss Mile Jedinak was when he was out injured last season, and in terms of experience the Republic of Ireland international certainly carries that with well over 450 starting appearances to his name.

It does seem reading around that Burnley are the favourite though.
