Ever since head coach Dean Smith made the switch from Brentford to Aston Villa there has been an undercurrent of whether or not he’d return to Griffin Park for one or more of his former charges.

Featuring highly in those debates was 27-year-old Romaine Sawyers who Smith took with him when he made the switch to the London club from Walsall.

Sawyers has stepped up well to the Championship level and impressed plenty but with January speculation now growing, the links to him are becoming a little bit stronger – well as strong as any transfer wibbles at this time of year can be.

With us well stocked in the midfield areas, and no doubt with some turning their thoughts to our next crop of youngsters who fans want to see come through more under our current gaffer, Sawyers, for these fans at least, shouldn’t be an option.

I must admit, if we are going to go back and give Brentford more profit I’d focus on Dan Bentley or Chris Mepham myself, so I can see where the comments have come from. Plenty of others left it as ‘in Smith we trust’.
