In Sunday afternoon’s Second City derby, Aston Villa took a pretty comfortable 4-2 victory over near neighbours Birmingham City.

Despite falling behind in the game, goals from Jonathan Kodjia, Jack Grealish, a Tammy Abraham penalty and a fabulous effort from Alan Hutton gave us the bragging rights, the three points and the impressive scoreline and head coach Dean Smith made no bones about the fact that we weren’t brilliant on the day, so winning in such a fashion when not at our best should be a boost for everyone as we look towards the end of the season with promotion hopes still the ultimate aim.

Having taken the derby victory at his first attempt, Smith was obviously buoyant at the fulltime whistle and he told Sky Sports.

“I always see these games as opportunities and I think the players are now too. We have played some good football at times and look a threat but we just need to tidy up a little. Our aim is to get into the top two, that was it at the start and where we are now.”

With three wins on the spin and clear improvements in our performances and how we are now trying to play, the target of a top-two finish will delight fans but there’s plenty of work left to do and whilst we can all pick areas of the team we need to strengthen, Smith does seem to be eeking out ‘more’ from players now and that can only be a good thing.
