Oh dear me, David O’Leary has said he wishes he was still at Villa. We don’t David, trust me, we really don’t!
He said in the Birmingham Mail:
‘It’s interesting for me to sit and watch Villa signing these players now. We were so close to getting Sidwell and we had the chance to sign Scott Carson for £800,000, now Liverpool value him at £10million. But despite what happened I still have some good memories of my time at Villa. I felt that there was a lot of potential there and I always hoped I would be the lucky one to take Villa back among the top clubs.’
Adding, that he wishes Martin O’Neill luck and says Villa are in good hands.
He also claims ‘there are still Villa fans who thank me for what I did there. It just didn’t work out. I would hope to get back into football if the right job comes along but I’m still sorry it didn’t happen for me at Villa.’
I must admit his first season showed promise and he was working under the latter day Ellis era where there were major problems AND in the following seasons his sides were plagued with injuries, all that aside, he was just so unlikeable and played the politics so poorly that he put the majority (I think anyway?) of fans noses out of joint. Not sure there are many with any fondness for him and his ramblings about fickle fans and comments following our humiliating cup exits. Obviously you also have to look at the rumours that he left a second (following Leeds) split dressing room with all the talk of the mutiny of players going to Doug about the manager which led to his departure.
Hmmm, interesting, can’t say I miss the ‘honest bunch of lads’ rubbish but I would say – as he showed at Leeds – he’d have loved spending some of Randy’s money!
Still say without Barry in O’Leary’s final season we’d have been relegated, that is why I can never feel ill will towards our skipper, whether he moves or stays, he was at times the only player on the pitch in those days and if he’d disappeared like the others, we’d have been down.
