Aston Villa have this afternoon confirmed the somewhat expected signing of goalkeeper Andre Moreira from Atletico Madrid.

The 22-year-old stopper has featured on the rumour mill for a while now and he’d been with our first-team group on a trial basis as we took a closer look and then gave time for Nassef Sawiris to get his feet under the table so a deal could be done.

That deal is now done and the Portuguese youth international heads into Bodymoor Heath on a season-long loan spell.

Having been capped by his country and Under 19 through to Under 21 level, he began his career in his homeland before earning a move to Atleti in August 2014. Whilst he’s yet to debut for them, he has taken in numerous loan spells out for experience and he will now take in the Championship.

Speaking to the Official Site after completing the formalities, he was saying all the right things.

“I am very excited. It’s such a big opportunity at such a big club. It’s the perfect opportunity at the right moment. It’s a big move for me. Aston Villa is a great football club – a famous football club. The training facilities are great. I know the stadium is famous and historic. I just can’t wait to get started now.”

Of course, the other angle to this is he’s a client of Jorge Mendes of Wolves fame and his mere involvement now has it stated as fact that he’s advising our new owners on their transfer policy. We’ll see if that turns out to be true later in the day.

With that said, I can’t be the only one who wished Villa had announced it with just the text message in the video! (Maybe I’m just getting old?)
