Looks like the Republic of Ireland’s appointment of former Villa boy Steve Staunton could have an impact on Aston Villa.

‘Stan’ who is linking up with Sir Bobby Robson who has been brought in to provide some much needed experience, is also hoping to persuade Aston Villa’s reserve-team coach Kevin MacDonald to join the set up.

45-year-old MacDonald has remained an ever present at Villa Park despite the clubs famous managerial merry go round.

Stan’s dad (Tom) is quoted as saying the former Liverpool and Villa defender, who has been working with Paul Merson at Walsall, is ‘absolutely thrilled’ and that managing his country ‘was his ambition after finishing football.’

For Villa, lets hope the link is unfounded, as MacDonald has been an asset to Villa, steering the reserves to much success and helping many a player make the step up to the first team.
