David O’Leary is hoping to hang on to on loan midfielder Eirik Bakke.

O’Leary said ‘Eirik’s loan spell finishes this month and with our numbers I am desperate to keep him. Apart from Steven Davis and Gavin McCann I’ve got nobody else to put in there and he has been great so I hope we can keep him on loan.’ (What about Hendrie?!)

We asked in a poll if Villa should sign Eirik Bakke permanently from Leeds United. The player is currently on loan until the end of January, but he has said that he isn’t too keen on extending his loan deal because he would rather get a permanent deal.

This weekend West Bromwich Albion have been linked with a swoop for the combatative midfielder which could steal him from under their local rivals noses.

Bakke wasn’t allowed to play for Villa against Hull this weekend because Leeds didn’t want the player to be cup tied unless a deal had been sorted out.

51% of fans who voted said that Villa should sign him, 36% wanted him to stay on loan until the end of the season and then be judged, with only 13% saying that Villa should send him packing.

I’m slightly surprised at this result as he certainly hasn’t been able to show his best for with us so far, he’s only had limited chances and missed a good few games due to injuries. With the lack of funds at Villa, it would surely be a risk to take a player with such a poor injury record on a permanent basis?
