David O’Leary has urged the board of Aston Villa to ensure they sign Steven Davis up to a long contract.

The Northern Ireland international midfielder has impressed this season and is currently our top scorer with five goals (3 in the Prem).

The 19 year old has been linked several times to Manchester United with Alex Ferguson reportedly keeping a close eye on the player who he views as a possible long term replacement for former skipper Roy Keane.

Davis has 18 months left on his current contract but O’Leary wants him tied to a longer deal as he sees him as a key player in Villa’s future.

He said: ‘I know the agent has been down to see the board. I think it is important that player is signed for the future of the football club without a doubt.’

Davis has also said that he is happy at Villa and would like to stay.
