Olof Mellberg Has said tomorrow against Manchester United ‘might be a good game to move back into central defence’ having played mostly at right-back recently to cover for players missing by injury.

The Sweden international defender said:

“It has been all right at right back. I played there at the beginning of my international career but it was a long time ago. I feel more comfortable in the middle but I am happy to fulfil a role there if that’s what the gaffer feels is best.’

Adding ‘It will be nice to face Ronaldo. It might be a good game to maybe move back into the centre – but we will see how it goes. He is a great player and United have got Ryan Giggs who can operate in that position as well. We need to be on top of our game against them.’

He also thinks that Manchester United can win the title can fend off money bags Chelsea. ‘I think that United can hold off Chelsea. They look really strong. They have definitely been the strongest team so far this season. It is going to be between them and Chelsea for the title but Manchester United have looked really powerful so far.’

‘It will act as a really good lift if you can get a positive result out of this sort of game. Even though we need the points and we have got to get our home form going, I don’t think there will be any pressure on winning these games coming up against Manchester United. But, if we can get good results there, it will give everyone a boost.’

Must admit, I’d much rather see Mellberg play in the centre, trouble is who would O’Neill drop in the centre, both Gary Cahill and Liam Ridgewell have been playing well, Cahill especially in my ever so humble opinion?

  • At the moment I think we need Ollie to stay at right-back. As you said JF, Ridgewell and Cahill are doing well in the centre right now. Although we could possible do with Ollie’s experience against Man U, the thought of Hughes against Giggs is scary!!!

  • I’d consider giving Cahill and Ridgewell a rest over the hectic xmas period. Move Mellberg back into the centre for the next 2 games and alternate hispartner between Ridge and Cahill.

  • I think he is doing a great job and getting to play a little at RB.His crosses are decent , I just wish he would put balls over the top for Gabby to run into as we are not using his pace enough at Right Wing…………….Thought about a little song for Ron Saunders tomorrow…To the sound of da do ron, ron, da do ron, ron!…………..In your eiight years we won alot, we love you Ron, Ron we love you Ron, All your hard work helped us win the Cup, we love you Ron, Ron we love you Ron……Yeah We love you Ron, Yeah we thank you Ron, Yeah we love you Ron…..we love you Ron,Ron,we love you Ron.

  • I would play Hughes. I’m not a fan, by any stretch of the imagination but he is a right back, he does have plenty of big game experience and despite his poor form this season he can do a job there. If Delaney was fit I’d bring him in ahead of Hughes tho.

  • Agree with JP. Cahill has been superb IMO. Maybe Ridgewell deserves a rest, but he’s been excellent too. It’ll be a nice problem to have when Laursen is fit again in the New Year

  • As we all knew he would, Olof has proved more than a capable right full back in our hour of need. Whatever MON decides for tomorrow is fine by me, but we do need Olof back in central defense at the earliest opportunity. The question of who would then play at right full back provides only one answer. Aaron Hughes. We’ve no one else.
