Some very patchy reports on Levante attempting to buy Villa captain Olof Mellberg. One report suggests David O’Leary tried to ‘engineer’ the Swedish defenders exit.

However the Spanish club would only bid £2million for the 28-year-old and Villa wanted in the region of £4millioin.

Levante sporting director Manuel Salvador said: ‘The key to it all was money. The English club refused to accept our offer and it is now all over.’

Good, with O’Leary gone, I think we’ll see a few of our ‘want-aways’ settle down and see their Villa careers re-ignite, it always happens when a new manager arrives.
